Over the course of 2017, Canadians have come together to mark the country’s sesquicentennial in a myriad of ways thanks to the work of our Alliance members. From celebratory parades to sombre remembrances, Canadians were given the opportunity to participate in projects and events that resonated with their personal connection to Canada, its history, and its future.

Through the Alliance network, we saw how these projects and events highlighted the things that mattered most in communities across the country:

Out west, Alberta hosted 27 initiatives focusing on reconciliation, while British Columbia had 111 initiatives dedicated to arts and culture. The Prairies showcased their love for sport with 75 initiatives across Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In Ontario, 128 initiatives engaged youth, while Quebec focused on inclusion with 75 initiatives in that area. In the east, the Atlantic provinces hosted 41 initiatives supporting the environment and the Northern territories had 12 initiatives each that focused on arts and youth.

Be sure to follow us on social media to learn more about our Alliance members’ impact through our Canada 150 wrap up campaign on Facebook and Twitter.

Harnessing ‘the power of together’ for Canada’s next 150 years

As we’ve shared in previous newsletters, we’ve begun to explore how we can leverage our Alliance network beyond Canada’s sesquicentennial. To date, we have been a part of two events exploring ‘The Next 150: A National Conversation on Canada and the Sustainable Development Goals’. You can learn more about these conversations by reading our June 29 event report and our November 17 event report.

These conversations demonstrated a growing mobilization around the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals agenda at the local, regional, and national level, and a desire to stay connected. We will be exploring how the Canada 150 priorities of youth, inclusion and diversity, reconciliation and environment connect to the global goals of no poverty, good health ad well-being, climate action, gender equality and more in the coming months.

If this sounds like it may connect with your work, we ask that you fill out a brief survey on your organization and what you’ll be working on coming out of 2017. This is of great help to us in identifying how the Alliance can be most helpful moving forward.

We’ll be in touch in the new year – until then, we congratulate you on all you accomplished during this milestone year and wish you a well-deserved break over the holidays.
